ST.-PETERSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE-LEVEL (MASTER) PROGRAM IN NEUROSCIENCE, 'FROM NEURON TO COGNITION'

The graduate-level (Master) Program in Neuroscience: 'From Neuron to Cognition' was launched in the fall, 2006 in the University of St.-Petersburg, Faculty of Biology and Soil Sciences.

The Program offers full compliance with the European standards in Education:

  • Contemporary Courses in English and Russian with emphasis in the former language
  • Practicing in the leading laboratories in Helsinki University, University of Hamburg and Saint-Petersburg University
  • Access to up-to-date scientific literature, including leading journals in Neuroscience, bestselling handbooks in Neuroscience
  • Application of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)

Application for the next academic year is usually in June

Program lasts two years (first round is from 1.09.06 to 31.08.08), including the Master thesis defense.
The Program is based on the three main lecture modules:

1. Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience
2. Cognitive Neuroscience
3. Computational Neuroscience & Math Methods

Each module consists of a set of compulsory and optional courses. During the years 2006-2007, students will be able to choose between the two first modules of specialization, whereas the third one will be launched in 2008.

Program will use European Credit Transfer System ECTS. The full Master’s Program takes two years and equals 120 credits (ECTS): Lecture courses and seminars: 80 ECTS units (compulsory across-modular courses - 50, compulsory module courses – 20, optional module courses - 10). Master’s thesis including training in practical research activities: 30 credits. Others (lectures, conferences, workshops, summer schools): 10 credits.

Students will have unique opportunity to attend courses and practical trainings in the Universities of Helsinki (HU) and Hamburg (ZMNH) (e.g., “Neuronal oscillators”, “Analysis of Ion Currents in excitable cells”, Methods of Cognitive Neuroscience (EEG, MEG, TMS)”, “Advanced optical microscopy”, etc.)

Requirements for students

The admission of the students will be based on the results of tests in Neurobiology and English. The following requirements have to be satisfied upon enrollment to the Program:
1. Bachelor Degree or Diploma in specialization
2. Knowledge of English
3. Mobility
4. Accordance of the preparation level to educational criteria of the program (rules of Russian Federation for entering to Master’s program) вставить документ rules.doc
Exam on Biology is obligatory for those who do not have Bachelor Degree in Biological disciplines.

Up to 8 students may be enrolled in the degree program each year. There is a possibility to be enrolled on the paid basis also including educational loan from program “Kredo” http://www.prokredo.ru

The creation of the program is supported by the EU Tempus Program (TEMPUS CD_JEP_25026_2004 http://www.etf.eu.int/tempus.nsf)
